re: 'Up in smoke'

May 3:  This was a 10 alarm wake-up call yet again in many ways.  Here in the Village, Bowery and Lower East Side, we fight the same struggles over the landmark status of buildings.  We do not want mirrored buildings reflecting a historic past that no longer exists.  We don't want high structures that exclude the dynamic community members who make the neighborhood so desireable. NYU wants to build yet another megadorm -- and on the grave of St. Ann's Church which was not landmark protected.  Re-open our firehouses and protect our landmark buildings.  In doing so, you preserve our history and our dynamic, diverse community members that are New York.
